The new journal issue focuses on the development of Roma civil society and Roma participation in policy-making and knowledge-production processes. It has grown out of a unique three-day gathering of Roma and pro-Roma activists and thinkers held in Budapest in October 2014. Following the structure of the workshop, the journal issue contains critical papers by established and emerging activists and scholars in three sections: (1) activism and civil society; (2) knowledge production; (3) alliances with gender and LGBT movements.

The first section is dedicated to the critical reflections on the previous decades of Roma civil society struggle, but also to think about future directions. The second section examines the need for new directions and debates in the field of knowledge production: there is a growing mood that greater emphasis should be given to research ‘for’ and ‘with’ Roma communities through community-based and participatory research. Proposals are made on a research which facilitates community voices to be heard and actively involves them in all stages of the research process. The third section deals with the role of Feminism and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) minorities within the Romani movement. Feminist and LGBT activists are great resources and allies, who have developed amazing strengths in their battles to overcome not just racism but also sexism and homophobia.

Such bridging and outward forms of social, cultural and sexual identity capital need to be reflected in the development of the Romani Movement, which should seek to build broad intersectional alliances across Roma communities and constituencies, incorporating not only interests but solidarity and altruism.

Internationalisation is a dominant policy discourse in the field of higher education today, driven by an assemblage of economic, social and educational concerns. It is often presented as an ideologically neutral, coherent, disembodied, knowledge-driven policy intervention—an unconditional good. Mobility is one of the key mechanisms through which internationalisation occurs, and is perceived as a major form of professional and identity capital in the academic labour market. Yet, questions remain about whether opportunity structures for mobility are unevenly distributed among different social groups and geopolitical spaces. In recent decades, spillover has become a highly influential concept which has led to the initiation of new theoretical and methodological approaches that are designed to understand how people attempt to reconcile their work and private lives. The very notion of spillover presupposes that these spheres are connected, since the people who move between them bring certain 'less visible' content with them such as cognitive or affective mental constructs, skills, behaviors, etc. This paper attempts to create fresh insight into the different areas, themes and methodologies related to how spillover has been addressed over the last ten years. Four main categories are discussed based on the 76 academic articles that were selected: (1) general spillover research, (2) job flexibility and spillover, (3) individual coping strategies, and (4) the spillover effect on the different genders. The final section of the paper provides a tentative synthesis of the main conclusions and findings from the examined papers.

Ádám Havas and Ádám Ser: „Poor Neighbours” – The Structure of the Budapest Jazz Scene
Our research, based on qualitative interviews and survey technique, is the first cultural sociological inquiry that investigates contemporary Hungarian jazz scene focusing on elements of symbolic and economic stratification within the scene. The research investigates the logic of position-takings and struggles for legitimacy of jazz musicians considered as creative workers based mainly on Pierre Bourdieu’s relational theory of artistic fields. The detailed presentation of some sociological and historical-sociological investigations serves the purpose of situating the research questions and findings in the contemporary scientific discourses on jazz, therefore the study allows the reader to gain insight into our methodological and theoretical “research alchemy”. The main stake of our work is to provide an empirically established model of the creation of and struggles for reputation based on the constructions of reality of the musicians themselves.



Bevezetés Kutatásunk alapvetően a kultúraszociológia módszertani és elméleti pozíciójából igyekszik modellszinten bemutatni a budapesti jazzszcéna 2 belső rétegződését mélyinterjús és kérdő-íves technikákkal. A jazz studies vagy jazztanulmányok magyarországi kibontakozásával párhuzamosan 3 kutatásunk – Malecz (1981, 1987) munkáit leszámítva – az első, amely szo-ciológiai modellalkotás igényével készül a kortárs jazz-zenészek mint kreatív munkavállalók viszonyairól, és elsősorban a mezőelmélet relációs logikájával és a szcéna fogalmával elemzi az erőtér belső hierarchiáját szervező tényezőket. E szempontból kiemelten fontosak a gaz-dasági profitok és kreatív önmegvalósításból származó konfliktusok és a mainstream és free jazz oppozíciójának szerepe a szcéna szimbolikus rétegződésében. Szabó Réka mélyinterjúkra építő 2014-ben írt MA-szakdolgozata a kortárs magyar jazzről ugyancsak jelenté-keny a téma hazai kutatása szempontjából, nemcsak azért, mert nagyítóval kell keresni a szociológia módszertanát alkalmazó magyar jazzkutatókat, de azért is, mert a dolgozat erőforrásbeli és terjedelmi korlátai ellenére izgalmas felvetéseket tárgyal egy sor olyan témáról, melyek reményeink szerint a kutatásunkra épülő tanulmányokban ke-rülnek majd módszeres kifejtésre.

Kornél Zipernovszky and Ádám Havas: Editors’ Preface

While the editors of the first Hungarian jazz studies volume acknowledge previous attempts in this direction, they hope that a focused interdisciplinary approach could yield more results than those of earlier publications. Th e teachings of various post-modern theoretical
schools contribute to realise the relative significance of jazz canons, the one-sidedness of the narrative of successive styles and to establish the new perspective of seeing jazz as a construct or as a discourse as the result of negotiations between different diasporas. The essays
explore historical topics, interviews challenge well-known concepts, and a sociological survey yields new results.
